INDEX

[908] TM Oliphant listed Mattie as a daughter by Presley's first marriage. He stated that she married a 'Washington Cooper'.

The only marriage record I could find between a male Cooper and a female Oliphant is in the "FTM Marriage Index: Tennessee, 1851-1900-County Court Records", which lists a marriage in Davidson County on 11/12/1859 between a "Sophronia Oliphant" and a "George W. Cooper". In the 1860 census, there is a G. Washington Cooper married to Sophronia in Davidson County, so had wondered (given that this is a 'Washington' Cooper married to an Oliphant) if Mattie = Sophronia. The problem with this theory, besides the difference in names is that the 1860 census shows Sophronia's birthplace to be Arkansas.

Tracing this family through the next several censuses shows, however, that the children and grandchildren born to them match the children that TM Oliphant has in his history, so it must be them. See notes on Mattie's sister Mary Mollie and her father Presley for more information about the Arkansas connection.

Mattie is missing from the home in 1870 and subsequent census records, and the last child appears to have been born in abt. 1867. Apparently she died around this time.
