General was his name. Was a "soldier of fortune" - went off to fight in the Spanish-American war and was gone for years. Everyone thought he was killed, but then he turned up after about 15 years. He married while he was away and had one daughter. (source: Ruby Hewgley Barnes)
The Spanish-American War was from 1897-1898. According to the TN State Library and Archives online "Index to Service Abstracts of Soldiers in Tennessee Volunteer Units in the Spanish American War", General served in D and G Companies of the 1st Infantry. He is listed as "General W. Davis".
