[575]
Died in nursing home. She was 'mean' - didn't believe in God or the Bible. Everytime Will got a Bible she'd burn it. Would beat him with a buggy whip while he slept. (source: Ruby Hewgley Barnes)
On reading the entry above from Ruby Hewgley Barnes, Marjorie Hewgley Northern wrote the following:
"I knew her quite well, and don't remember her as mean, but don't doubt it. I do know if her name had been Mary -- she would have fit the nursery rhyme -- Mary, Mary quite contrary. She lived with my grandmother and my great-aunt, Tennie, Nelson's sister, a lot of the time and we lived near my grandmother. As I remember, after she and Will divorced, she never really had a home. Moved around between her sisters and other family members, including Myrtle's mother Ellen."
"One story [from one of my entries on Matilda. This was sent to me by another niece or great niece] relates that Tildy was rocking quite spiritedly as a baby crawled on the floor nearby. Tildy was cautioned not to rock on the baby's fingers to which she retorted while continuing her spirited rocking 'He'll Learn' ". (2/22/2005 email)
