Middle initial listed as 'A' in 1860 census, and 'E' in 1870.
Known as "Bud" to Elba Oliphant.
Ran a blacksmith shop at 'slab town'(source: Ruby Hewgley Barnes). 1880 census lists his occupation as "work on farm".
Ruby Barnes remembers three children in the family besides Mary: Sam, Sonny, and Jenny. The four children listed in the 1880 census were Henry S., Mary, Willie, and Jennie. I've used those names in the database. Perhaps Henry's middle initial 'S' is where the 'Sam' comes from and perhaps Willie was known as Sonny...or perhaps there were additional children after the 1880 census. Thus far I've not found later census records for this family.
A photo of a man and woman that was in Elba Hewgley Oliphant's possession at the time of her death is labeled on the back "Mattie and Sam Elliot (Virgil Hewgley's mother's brother)".
Ruby recalls that, "Grandpa Elliott ordered a Ford car - he put it together himself. He'd have to get out and push it up hills." It was a T-model Ford kit.
