All available census records show her name to be Susan, not Sarah, but was known as Sarah and listed on tombstone as Sarah. Both 1880 census and 1900 census clearly show the wife of Nelson to be Susan E. Hewgley. Susan was a common nickname for Sarah.
In 1860 census Susan E. is 11 years old in the home of her parents, Thomas and Sarah Gleaves in Davidson Co. In their home in 1850, there is a two year old named Elizabeth; apparently Elizabeth is what the middle initial 'E' stands for.
Remarking on the photos of Sarah, Elba Elizabeth Hewgley (her granddaughter) stated, "She looks so stern, but she was a sweet woman."
Tombstone lists birthdate as 1847. 1900 census lists Jul/1846 date. Photo of Tombstone available.
