In some of Tolbert's letters to Vergil, it appears that he signs his name as Tolbert L. Hewgley. Likewise, Vergil lists his name sometimes as Tolbert L. (or initials T.L.H.) in her notebook. There is one entry in her notebook where she refers to him as "Tolbert lenard finnings(?) Hewgley". He may have had two middle names, Lenard/Leonard and Fanning.
Tolbert lived on Bull Run Road and farmed. In 1917 he worked on the railroad in Florida, in 1918 he returned and worked in a powder plant for ammo in WWI, then leased land on Hydes Ferry Pike/Ashland City Hwy and sharecropped. He died in the 1918 flu epidemic (from interview with Ruby Barnes). According to Ruby, "there was 18 inches of snow on the ground there when Daddy was buried." She says that when he died there were so many deaths occurring that "there weren't enough hearses or ambulances to care for the bodies. They were loaded on flat bed trucks and delivered to the homes."
There are two stones in cemetery with conflicting birthdates - the birth date on older tombstone is 1891. Newer stone has 17 Sep 1890. Photos of stones available. His WWI registration (in his hand) lists 1890 as the birth year.
On his WWI registration dated 5 Jun 1917, he describes himself as medium height, stout build, light blue eyes, brown hair, and that he has a crippled hand.

In a notebook belonging to Vergil, she listed a couple of entries regarding her marriage:
"Vergil Rosale Davis and Tolbert Lenard Finnings Heugley was married Dec 25 1907"
"Vergil L. Davis and Tolbert L. Heugley was married December 25, 1907"
"Miss Vergil Davis Mr. Tolbert Hewgley married December 25 1907 at 2:30 oclock at Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Davis's home. Married by G.W. Carney."
