In 1850 census(p.473), living in District 22 of Wilson County with wife Nancy and children Melsourie & Nancy. A Sarah Cawthon, age 70 is also in the home. Both Sarah and the adult Nancy were born in Virginia, while the rest of the family was born in TN. From this it would seem that perhaps Nancy is a Cawthon. Indeed, a James W. Hewgley married a Nancy Cawthon in 1834, three years before the first child in this household was born. This all adds up.
The 1850 and 1870 census list James as being born in Tennessee, while the 1860 census says he was born in Virginia. James' birthdate, depending on the census one uses as a source, may be as early as 1809 or as late as 1815. It appears that the the majority of the family arrived in TN after 1814, so it seems unlikely that he was born in TN.
In 1860 census, listed as a Merchant. C W Young, son of William Young and Nancy Hewgley Young is living in this household as a "clerk for merchant".
In 1860 census, daughter Nancy has moved into the home of George W. Carver, next door to Mary Hummer Hewgley Carver. Perhaps James is the son of James and Mary? Melsourie is old enough to have been married and moved out, but I haven't located her.
The 1870 census has James and 'Margrett' in District 24 of Wilson Co. with an 8 year old - name looks like Bulviy. James' age appears to be 54 or 64 - either way it is about 5 years one way or the other from the estimated birth date from the other census records of 1810.
In 1880, there is a 65 yo J.W. Hewgley living as a boarder in the home of S. B. Hardy. This age is a little off, but then again so was the last census. Margaret died in 1771, and his next marriage doesn't take place till 1881, so this very well could be him.
