William and his family appear to have been enumerated twice in the 1850 census. He is listed first, in September, in Rutherford County. The second enumeration in is December in Gibson County. The names of him, his wife, and kids and their ages all line up to be the same family, plus there is an additional piece of evidence. Both of the William C. Oliphant families live next door to the John Lane family - another family enumerated in both counties. It appears that William and his wife picked up and moved with her family from Rutherford to Gibson County.
William was a 'mechanic', according to the 1850 census. The 1860 census lists "C&B Maker" as his profession.
The 1850 Slave Schedule of the census lists William C. Oliphant of Sulphur Springs, Rutherford, TN as owning one slave - a 14yo black female.
